About Humpty’s Restaurants International Inc.
Humpty’s Restaurants International Inc. is proud to be one of Canada’s leading franchisors of full-service family restaurants, with 25 locations across Western Canada.
History
Founded in 1977 by Don and Jan Koenig, Humpty’s began as a small 50-seat establishment in Blackie, Alberta. Despite having no prior restaurant experience, the Koenigs expanded into the Calgary market by 1976, establishing a catering company alongside three soup and sandwich shops.
After a year of researching the breakfast market, Don and Jan identified a significant opportunity in all-day breakfast. In November 1977, they converted one of their soup and sandwich shops into the first Humpty’s Egg Place. The name, inspired by the association between eggs, all-day breakfast, and the storybook character Humpty Dumpty, was a natural fit for their family-focused restaurant.
Humpty’s quickly expanded, opening two new Calgary locations in 1979 and 1981. With increasing franchise inquiries, Humpty’s received approval to franchise from the Alberta Securities Commission in 1982. The first franchise was awarded in Red Deer, Alberta, in April 1986, followed by Lethbridge and Edmonton within three months.
In 1988, Humpty’s Egg Place became Humpty’s Family Restaurants, broadening its menu to include lunch and dinner items. This change allowed them to remain competitive and meet the market’s demand for more diverse offerings. Between 1988 and 1990, Humpty’s awarded twenty more franchises, leading to the current 25 locations across Western Canada.
