Our Story
Where It All Began
Pepeo, born and raised in Milan, Italy, grew up surrounded by the vibrant hospitality industry. His father owned and operated two successful restaurants in Milan and a popular open-air nightclub in Varazze, a summer destination for Europeans seeking the quintessential Riviera lifestyle.
A Passion for Excellence
Pepeo joined his father’s restaurant in Milan as a teenager, eventually becoming a co-owner. He learned the importance of exceptional ingredients, quality food, consistency, and customer love in the restaurant business.
A Chance Encounter
Karren, born in Zimbabwe and raised in Canada, met Pepeo’s sister while working in Milan’s fashion industry. Introduced to Pepeo in 1993, it was love at first sight. They married in 1994 in Varazze, Italy.
A Journey of Flavors
The couple moved to Grenada in 1997, buying a share in a small bakery. Pepeo expanded the business, adding pasta and pizza to the menu. They became sole owners in 2003. Their three children were born in Milan and Grenada during their 15-year island adventure.
Family Reunites
In 2011, Karren returned to Canada, settling in Spruce Grove with their children. Pepeo joined them in 2013, leaving behind their island life. In 2014, they brought their vision to life with Porta Romana.
A Collaborative Dream
Karren designed and decorated the restaurant, while Pepeo crafted a traditional Italian menu. Chef Aaron Smentek, a Red Seal Chef with international culinary expertise, joined the team in 2016. Together, they refined the menu, blending local flavors with Italian traditions.
